Dr. Vito Antonio Desolato (A.D.) Taglia was born 15 July 1896 in Chicago, the son of Francesco and Fiorentina Taglia. He was baptized at Assumption BVM Church on 30 July 1896. He died 3 May 1957; buried Mount Carmel Cemetery. He received his S.B. (B. S.) degree from the University of Chicago, and went on to Rush Medical School in Chicago, which at that time was affiliated with the University of Chicago. On 21 March 1919 he received a certificate after completing four years of course work. During this time period, medical students had to perform a 5th year internship before receiving their medical degree. Dr. Taglia performed his internship at Columbia Hospital in Chicago, and received his M.D. on 19 March 1920 (email from M. Nathalie Wheaton, Rush University Medical Center Archives, 5 February 2010). Following his graduation, he had a medical practice at Taylor and Racine, and continued his affiliation with Columbus Hospital. In 1930 he and his family lived at 1406 Flournoy in Chicago, and in the early 1940s they lived in a brownstone on Jackson Blvd. The family moved to Oak Park in 1948 to 533 Fair Oaks. Enclosed is an article co-authored by Dr. Taglia with Noah Fox: “Osteitas Fibrosa Cystica: Differential Diagnosis,” in Archives of Otolaryngology, March 1943. (This was the only medical article found in a search of Index Medicus).
He married Lena Riccio on 8 May 1920 at our Lady of Pompei Church, Rev. Carlo Fani presiding. She was the daughter of Giaciato and Marie (Tufo) Riccio. Giancinto died 26 November 1944, buried Mount Carmel Cemetery. Lena attended the University of Chicago. She died 30 June 1993 at age 93, in River Forest; buried Mount Carmel. She was active in Italian cultural and philanthropic organizations, and the women’s auxiliary of the Chicago Medical Society.
Wednesday Journal, 7 July 1993:
“Lena Taglia, 93, Of River Forest, died June 30, 1993 at home. Mrs. Taglia was a 1922 graduate of the University of Chicago. She was the mother of Florence Romano and Victor Taglia, grandmother of 17, and great grandmother of 46. Funeral Mass was celebrated July 1 at St. Luke Church.”
